AIAA Announces Student Design Competition Winners Written 17 September 2019

September 17, 2019 – Reston, Va. – The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) Foundation is pleased to announce the winners of its 2018–2019 Design Competitions.

“AIAA’s Design Competitions are more than winning a prize—they help students solve real-life problems and prepare them to make a difference in the aerospace community,” said Dan Dumbacher, AIAA executive director. “On behalf of AIAA, I congratulate them for a job well done!”

The competitions asked AIAA students to respond to various requests for proposal outlining a design problem that required specialized, technical solutions. For more information about the competition, please visit www.aiaa.org/home/get-involved/students-educators/Design-Competitions.

There were six competitions in the following categories:

  • Aircraft: Undergraduate Team, Undergraduate Individual, Graduate Team
  • Missile Systems: Graduate Team
  • Space: Undergraduate Team
  • Engine: Undergraduate Team

The winners are:

Undergraduate Team Aircraft Design

  • First Prize: California State Polytechnic University, Pomona (Pomona, CA), for their design “EFA-1.” Sarmen Menachecan, Sheldon Liang, Margaux Rutherford, Jesus Aldana, Travis Ahlquist, Raymond Park, Andrew LaGuardia, Gabrielle Mlagenovic, Martha Hernandez.   • Second Prize: University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (Champaign, IL), for their design “The IA Mark 2.” Joshua Simmons, Kyle Nixon, Shengchao Wang, Melanie Cui, Austin Zhang, Jamie Fredrick, Michael Danendra. Rodra Hascaryo and Raeann VanSickle, project advisors. Dr. Jason Merret, faculty advisor. Team name: Iota Air.

  • Third Prize: University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (Champaign, IL), for their design “The SEAL: A Thin Haul Transport and Air Taxi.” Emil Broemmelsiek, Andrew Burke, Matthew Hogan, Adam Maris, Nicholas Martin, Aakanksha Notey, Allen Wong. Dr. Jason Merret, faculty advisor. Team name: ETA.  

Undergraduate Individual Aircraft Design

  • First Prize: Mina Khalilzade Fathi, Sharif University of Technology (Tehran, Iran), for her design “WAAPI: Wild Area Aerial Protective Inspector.” Dr. S. Mohammad B. Malaek, faculty advisor.

  • Second Prize: Nathan Simon, University of Kansas (Lawrence, KS), for his design “The Pteslasaur.” Dr. R. Barrett-Gonzalez, faculty advisor.

  • Third Prize: Jacob Rogers, University of Kansas (Lawrence, KS), for his design “AE521: DeHond.” Dr. R. Barrett-Gonzalez, faculty advisor.  

Graduate Team Aircraft Design

  • First Prize: Sharif University of Technology (Tehran, Iran), for their design “SPRICHO: An On-Demand Energy-Efficient E-VTOL Airtaxi.” Yasamin Karamian, Farid Rassouli, Hossein Akbari, Mohaddeseh Ghasemi, Alireza Akbari, Mohammad Reza Najafi, Mohammad Alizadeh, Mohommad Hassan Sabeti, Zahra Saedi, Mohammad Mehdi Mohammadi.   • Third Prize: Université de Liège (Liège, Belgium), for their design “Mistral Airtaxi.” Saddik Addarkaoui, Albin Bernier, Yusi Chen, Haiming Compere, Antoine Dore, Maxime Fransolet, Remy Jumpertz, Luca Macchiaiolo. Graduate Team Missile System Design

  • First Prize: California State Polytechnic University, Pomona (Pomona, CA), for their design “Project Lance: A Modernization of the United States’ Intercontinental Ballistic Missile System.” Rebecca Thomas, David Hernandez, Vishal Barkataki, Tatsuya Danno, Joshua Klyde, Pablo Lopez, Jesus David Montes.   • Second Prize: Georgia Institute of Technology (Atlanta, GA), for their design “SLIM JIM: Strategic Long-Range Intercontinental Missile for Joint Interest in MAD.” Ryan Ogilvie, Casey Wilson, Jeffrey Pattison, Rahul Rameshbabu, Andrew Van Zwieten, William Craver. Dr. Dimitri Mavris, academic advisor. Dr. Bradford Robertson, faculty advisor. Team Name: SLIM JIM.

  • Third Prize: California State Polytechnic University, Pomona (Pomona, CA), for their design “Project Fenrir: Proposal for the Replacement of the Minuteman-III ICBMs.” Colby Truong, John Clements, Edgar Diaz, Eric Gonzalez, Rushi Patel, Courtney Sorenson, Nolan Wells. Undergraduate Team Space Design

  • First Prize: California State Polytechnic University, Pomona (Pomona, CA), for their design “Project CAVEMAN: CARGO VEHICLE AND MANNED TRANSPORT.” Luis Ortiz, Benjamin Younes, Mark Murphy, Samuel Daugherty-Saunders, Cole Edwards Alexander Engler, Alexander Villalobos.   • Second Prize: Sharif University of Technology (Tehran, Iran), for their design “Project I-MARS: Intelligent Multi-surface Access Reusable Spacecraft.” Ilia Nasiriziba, Mohammad J.   • Third Prize: Istanbul Technical University (Istanbul, Turkey), for their design “Multi-Use Lunar Transportation Vehicle Utilizing Deep Space Gateway.” Ömer Uçar, Miray Karpat, Umut Demir, Ege Türkyılmaz, Onur Öztekin, Şeyma Yıldız Mutlu, Mert Akdemir, Ecem Akçakil, Serkan Aslan, Emirhan Eser Gül. Undergraduate Team Engine Design

  • First Prize: Sharif University of Technology (Tehran, Iran), for their design “STS-1000: A Candidate Turboshaft Engine for Hybrid Electric Medium Altitude Long Endurance Search and Rescue UAV.” M.   • Second Prize: Warsaw Military University of Technology (Warsaw, Poland), for their design “PFF-63 – Candidate Engine for a Hybrid Electric Medium Altitude Long Endurance Search and Rescue UAV.” Karol Kozdrowicz, Maciej Spychała, Damien Mciorowski, Karolina Pazura.   • Third Prize: University of Kansas (Lawrence, KS) for their design “SR-1000BDE: A Next Generation Hybrid Electric Medium Altitude Long Endurance Gas Generator.” Jacksen Goyer, Tim Aiken Anthony Bendure, Blake Hartwell, Ryan Niday, Jameson Poth, Charles Richmond. Dr. Saeed Farokhi and Dr. Ray Taghavi, faculty advisors.
