Awards Recognize Achievements in Aerospace Power Systems and Energy Systems

June 13, 2013 – Reston, Va. – The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) will present technical achievement awards at a noon awards luncheon on July 16 as part of the 11th International Energy Conversion Engineering Conference (IECEC), July 15–17, at the San Jose Convention Center, San Jose, Calif.

• Geoffrey A. Landis R&D engineer, NASA Glenn Research Center, Cleveland, Ohio, will receive the 2013 AIAA Aerospace Power Award. The award is presented for a significant contribution in the broad field of aerospace power systems, specifically as related to the application of engineering sciences and systems engineering to the production, storage, distribution, and processing of aerospace power. Landis is being recognized for 35 years of developing advanced photovoltaic power systems for extreme space environments; providing leadership, fostering innovation, interfacing with the public; and contributing to an improved scientific understanding of operating solar power devices from the solar corona to the Martian surface and beyond.
• Ryoichi S. Amano, professor, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, will receive the 2013 AIAA Energy Systems Award. The award is presented for significant contribution in the broad field of energy systems, specifically as related to the application of engineering sciences and systems engineering to the production, storage, distribution, and conservation of energy. Amano is being recognized for pioneering work in the fields of computational fluid dynamics and terrestrial energy with interest in propulsion, turbulence and energy systems with successful innovations in research, education and consulting.
