AIAA Salutes World Space Week Written 8 October 2013

October 8, 2010 – Reston, Va. – The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) salutes the remarkable benefits that space exploration, science, and technology have provided to people everywhere, in celebration of World Space Week, October 4–10, 2013. The theme of this year’s celebration is “Exploring Mars, Discovering Earth.”

“World Space Week prompts each of us to consider just how different our world is due to humanity’s continuing development, understanding, and utilization of our space frontier. From the satellites which bring the world closer together, to the scientific breakthroughs we hope will emerge from research on the International Space Station, to the innovative technologies that migrate from the space community into our living rooms – space makes a difference in our lives,” said AIAA President Mike Griffin. “I hope that people throughout the world will take time this week to join in the international celebration of everything that space exploration, science, and technology does to make our world better.”

World Space Week was created by the United Nations General Assembly in 1999 to “celebrate each year at the international level the contributions of space science and technology to the betterment of the human condition.” Each year over fifty nations organize events involving space agencies, schools, aerospace companies, planetariums, museums, astronomy clubs, and other interested groups to celebrate the week.
