AIAA to Celebrate Achievements in Aircraft and Atmospheric Systems at AIAA AVIATION 2014

May 29, 2014 – Reston, Va. – The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) will celebrate technical achievements in aircraft and atmospheric systems at a 12:30 p.m. awards luncheon on 19 June, as part of the AIAA Aviation and Aeronautics Forum and Exposition (AIAA AVIATION 2014), being held 16–20 June at the Hyatt Regency Atlanta, Georgia. The honorees are:


  • The Boeing 787 Dreamliner Team, Seattle, Washington, will receive the AIAA 2014 Aircraft Design Award. The award is presented for the conception, definition, or development of an original concept leading to a significant advancement in aircraft design or design technology. The team will be recognized for the conception, design, and development of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner leading to substantial airliner performance improvements and significant advances in aircraft design and technology. Michael Sinnett, vice president, product development, The Boeing Company, will accept the award on behalf of the team.

  • Steven H. Walker, AIAA Fellow and deputy director, Defense Advanced Research Project Agency (DARPA), Arlington, Virginia, will receive the AIAA 2014 Hap Arnold Award For Excellence in Aeronautical Program Management. The award is presented for outstanding contributions in the management of a significant aeronautical or aeronautical related program or project. Walker will be recognized for outstanding and distinguished leadership and management of the Air Force science and technology and acquisition at the Pentagon.

  • John I. Erdos, AIAA Associate Fellow and president and chief executive officer (retired), GASL, Inc., Ronkonkoma, New York, will receive the AIAA 2014 Hypersonic Systems and Technologies Award. This award recognizes outstanding, sustained contributions and achievements in enabling technologies and/or the integration of technologies, for system applications in the advancement of hypersonic flight. Erdos will be recognized for over 40 years of visionary technical and organizational leadership of foundational technology, ground test, and flight test activities that became the cornerstones of the international knowledge base of hypersonic systems and technologies.

  • Robert A. Canfield, AIAA Associate Fellow and professor and assistant department head, aerospace and ocean engineering, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Blacksburg, Virginia, will receive the AIAA 2014 Multidisciplinary Design Optimization Award. The award is presented for outstanding contributions to the development and/or application of techniques of multidisciplinary design optimization in the context of aerospace engineering. Canfield will be recognized for pioneering research on design optimization methods leading to structural optimization software, application of MDO to advanced aircraft concepts such as sensorcraft and for leadership in the MDO community.

  • Mark D. Maughmer, AIAA Associate Fellow and professor, aerospace engineering, The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, Pennsylvania, will receive the AIAA 2014 Piper General Aviation Award. The award is presented for outstanding contributions leading to the advancement of general aviation. Maughmer will be recognized for contributions to winglet designs on racing sailplanes, an advancement that promoted the broader acceptance and diffusion of winglet technology in the general aviation community.

Certificates of merit will also be presented to recognize “best papers” in aircraft and atmospheric systems, including Hypersonic Systems and Technology and Multidisciplinary Design Optimization.

Featuring 18 discussion tracks and 1,500 individual presentations across 125 topic areas, AVIATION 2014 is an international forum that will bring together leading minds from industry, academia and government to provide actionable insights into the critical challenges and opportunities facing aviation and aeronautics. Specific topics areas will include: global interoperability; supply change management; systems affordability, efficiency, and sustainability; R&D and operational integration; and the risks, rewards and roadblocks facing the future of unmanned systems.
