AIAA Foundation Announces Winners of its 2014 - 2015 Graduate Team Aircraft Design Competition Written 28 September 2015

September 28, 2015– Reston, Va. – The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) Foundation is pleased to announce the winners of its 2014–2015 Graduate Team Aircraft Design Competition.

“I congratulate the winners of this year’s AIAA Foundation Graduate Team Aircraft Design Competition. Competitions like this are a wonderful way for the next generation of aerospace professionals to gain practical experience in design,” said Sandy Magnus, AIAA executive director. “As professionals they will need to harness their ingenuity and skills to create new systems to shape the future of aerospace and competitions are the first step in building those skills. I am especially pleased to see that entries for this year’s competition came from around the world, reflecting the diversity and international reach of our community.”

The competition challenged teams to design an air transport operating system for use in a metropolitan area.

The winning teams are:

  • First Prize: Polytechnic University of Milan, Milan, Italy, for their design “Flynk.” Team members: Alessandro Broglia, Luca Clozza, Mattia Marcon, Dario Passi, Matteo Russo, Ciro Spada, Lorenzo Trainelli, Lorenzo Vendemini and Andrea Zuanetti. Lorenzo Trainelli, faculty advisor; Carlo Riboldi, project advisor.

  • Second prize: Delft University of Technology,Delft, The Netherlands, for their design “F.A.S.T.” Team members: Christian Alba, Piotr Druzdzel, Francesco Faggiano, Cristian Jesus Merino, Clara Moreno, Sofia Minano, Reynard de Vries, and Adam Gabor Vermes. Marilena Pavel, project advisor; Roelof Vos, faculty advisor.

  • Third prize: Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, Georgia, for their design “SMART.” Team members: Michael Cormier, Hugo Deneuville, Manish Pokhrel, Mingxuan Shi, Andrew Smith, Damien Thioulouse, and Charles Trader. Dimitri Mavris, faculty advisor; Simon Briceno and Kyle Collins, project advisors.
