Low-Carbon Emission Aviation, Propulsion Systems, Launch Vehicle Reusability, Nuclear-Powered Propulsion for Space Exploration, and Electric Aircraft Propulsion Among Subjects For Discussion July 5, 2016 – Reston, Va. – The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) will hold its Propulsion and Energy Forum and Exposition (AIAA Propulsion and Energy 2016), July 25–27, at the Salt Palace Convention Center, Salt Lake City. “From powering global commerce to enabling space exploration and commercialization, propulsion and energy systems are the heart of aerospace,” said Daniel “Dan” Dumbacher, Professor of Practice, School of Aeronautics and Astronautics at Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana, and Propulsion and Energy’s general chair. “This forum will bring together the aerospace community to discuss innovative solutions driving the technologies needed to bring the world closer together and explore our universe in bold and sustainable ways into the future.” Featuring 25 Discussion Tracks and over 700 technical presentations AIAA Propulsion and Energy 2016 is an international forum that will bring together leading minds from industry, academia and government to provide actionable insights into the critical challenges that confront aviation and space propulsion and energy use. The forum will kick off at 8:00 a.m. (MDT) on Monday, July 25, with a keynote address by Bran Ferren, co-founder and chief creative officer of applied minds llc. Plenary topics for the event are: “Propulsion Optimized Systems,” “Game Changing Developments in Propulsion and Energy,” “High Power Systems for Aerospace Applications,” “The Impact of Additive Manufacturing on the Design Process,” and “Formula for Success and Longevity in the Aerospace Business.” Pierre Chao, founding partner, Renaissance Strategic Advisors, will deliver closing remarks on Wednesday, July 27, at 1:30 p.m. (MDT). AIAA Propulsion and Energy 2016’s Forum 360 panel discussions will include: “The National Research Council’s Low-Carbon Aviation Report and Recommendations,” “Launch System Reusability: Holy Grail, Chasing our Tail, or Somewhere in Between?,” “Aircraft Electrical Propulsion,” and “Nuclear Power for Distant Solar Systems Destinations.” Speakers for the event include: Duane Cuttrell, director, Operations Engineering and Technical Operations, Lockheed Martin Aeronautics; Jim Free, deputy associate administrator of the Technical, Human Exploration and Operations Mission Directorate, NASA; Randy Furnas, director of the Office of Strategic Management, NASA Glenn Research Center; Rex Geveden, chief operating officer, BWX Technologies, Inc.; Ben Goldberg, vice president, science and engineering for propulsion systems, Orbital ATK; Tom Markusic, co-founder and chief executive officer, Firefly Space Systems; James Maughan, global technology director, GE Global Research; Gen. Ellen Pawlikowski, commander, Air Force Materiel Command, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base; John Scott, chief technologist, propulsion and power, NASA Johnson Space Center; and Susan Voss, president, Global Nuclear Networks Analysis LCC. AIAA Propulsion and Energy 2016 will feature a recognition luncheon on July 27, celebrating achievements in propulsion and energy systems and technology, as well as sustained service to the Institute. AIAA will present the following awards: Aerospace Power Systems Award, Air Breathing Propulsion Award, Energy Systems Award, Engineer of the Year Award, Propellants and Combustion Award, Sustained Service Award, and the Wyld Propulsion Award. AIAA will also present certificates of merit recognizing outstanding papers. GE and Orbital ATK are AIAA Propulsion and Energy 2016’s executive sponsors.
