AIAA To Celebrate Achievements in Aerospace Sciences At Its 2017
Aviation and Aeronautics Forum and Exposition
May 16, 2017 – Reston, Va. – The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) will celebrate technical achievements in aerospace sciences at a 12:30 p.m. (MDT) recognition luncheon on June 6, as part of the 2017 AIAA Aviation and Aeronautics Forum and Exposition (AIAA AVIATION Forum), June 5–9, at the Sheraton Denver Downtown Hotel, Denver, Colorado.
The honorees are:
- Dimitri Papamoschou, professor, mechanical and aerospace engineering at the Henry Samueli School of Engineering, University of California, Irvine, will receive the 2017 AIAA Aeroacoustics Award. The award honors Papamoschou’s “seminal contributions to understanding noise generations in multi-stream supersonic jets leading to one of the most promising noise reduction methods in current development.”
- John A. Benek, director, Computational Science Center, Air Force Research Laboratory, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, will receive the 2017 AIAA Aerodynamics Award. The award honors Benek’s “distinguished contributions to the development of the Chimera scheme making simulations over complex aerodynamic configurations feasible and for advancement in integrated computational fluid dynamics (CFD)/experimental studies.”
- Joseph Schetz, Fred D. Durham Endowed Chair, Crofton Department of Aerospace and Ocean Engineering, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Blacksburg, Virginia, will receive the 2017 AIAA Aerodynamic Measurement Technology Award. The award honors Schetz’s “more than 40 years of seminal contributions in shear stress sensors for complex flows.”
- Miguel R. Visbal, CFD technical advisor, Aerospace Systems Directorate, Air Force Research Laboratory, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, will receive the 2017 AIAA Fluid Dynamics Award. The award honors Visbal’s “pioneering contributions to understanding complex unsteady flows and multidisciplinary interactions using high fidelity methods.”
- Dan E. Marren, director, Arnold Engineering Development Complex White Oak Site, Silver Spring, Maryland, will receive the 2017 AIAA Ground Testing Award. The award honors Marren’s “impactful and sustained contributions to every aspect of test sciences.” Marren’s citation adds: “His efforts enabled new capabilities, advanced diagnostics and revitalized the generation testing workforce.”
- Valentin A. Bityurin, head of division for plasmadynamics and magnetohydrodynamic energy conversion (retired), Joint Institute for High Temperatures, Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow, will receive the 2017 AIAA Plasmadynamics and Lasers Award. The award honors Bityurin’s “distinguished professional career with seminal scientific contributions to the theoretical and experimental understanding of plasma physics, magnetohydrodynamic energy conversion, and plasma-magneto-aerodynamics.
- Bruce L. Drolen, senior technical fellow (retired), and chief engineer (retired), thermal technology, space platforms and payloads, Boeing Defense, Space and Security, Los Angeles, California, will receive the 2017 AIAA Thermophysics Award. The award honors Drolen’s “outstanding contributions to thermal engineering particularly relating to heat pipes, pumped fluid loops, aircraft thermal management and other heat transport devices.”
AIAA will also present certificates of merit for best papers.
