Ella M. Atkins Appointed Editor-in-Chief of AIAA's Journal of Aerospace Information Systems Written 29 January 2018

January 29, 2018 – Reston, Va. – Jim Maser, president of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA), appointed Ella M. Atkins to a three-year term as editor-in-chief of the Journal of Aerospace Information Systems (JAIS).
“Over the past few decades, aerospace computing has assumed an increasingly important, perhaps central, place in advancing air- and spacecraft capabilities and safety,” said John Daily, Chair of the AIAA Publications Committee. “We are delighted that Professor Atkins will take over the reins of this important journal. She brings years of experience and accomplishments to the task and we look forward to seeing the journal make significant contributions to the field.”
Dr. Atkins is a professor in the Aerospace Engineering Department at the University of Michigan where she has been innovative and influential in moving a traditional aerospace engineering department in new directions. She is also the Associate Director of Graduate Programs at the university’s Robotics Institute.
Atkins will be the fourth editor-in-chief of the journal. She succeeds Dr. Ashok Srivastava, who has served as editor-in-chief of JAIS since 2012.
The journal was launched in January 2004 and originally titled Journal of Aerospace Computing, Information, and Communication (JACIC), reflecting the growing importance of computing and information systems to aerospace engineering. JACIC was AIAA’s first online-only journal with a goal of rapid publication of all articles.
An Associate Fellow of AIAA, Atkins has made significant contributions to the Institute, including serving on the Intelligent Systems Technical Committee and the Software Technical Committee. She also serves as the faculty advisor for the AIAA University of Michigan Student Branch and was a founding organizer of the AIAA Infotech@Aerospace conference. She holds B.S. and M.S. degrees in Aeronautics and Astronautics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Science and Engineering from the University of Michigan.

The Journal of Aerospace Information Systems is devoted to the dissemination of original archival research papers describing new theoretical developments, novel applications, and case studies regarding advances in aerospace computing, information, and networks and communication systems that address aerospace-specific issues. Topics include aerospace systems and software engineering, verification and validation of embedded systems, uncertainty quantification, the field known as “big data,” data analytics, machine learning, knowledge management for aerospace systems, human-automation interaction, and systems health management for aerospace systems. Applications of autonomous systems, systems engineering principles, and safety and mission assurance are of particular interest.
