Boeing Debate On 737 MAX Manual “More Intense Than Usual” Written 6 December 2018

The Wall Street Journal (Subscription Publication) reports that government and industry sources suspect that an automated flight system involved in the crash of a Lion Air Boeing 737 was largely excluded from the aircraft’s operation manual. The decision was allegedly the subject of intense debate inside Boeing, according to the sources. Industry officials said that the internal debate at Boeing over what should be included in the 737 MAX’s manual as well as how much training would be required for pilots was more intense than usual. According to former Boeing and current government and airline officials, there was a strong effort to keep 737 MAX training to the minimum necessary. A Boeing spokesman disputed the characterization of the debate, and said that it was consistent with the company’s usual process.
