“Powering a Changing World” at the AIAA Propulsion and Energy Forum Written 17 July 2019

July 17, 2019 – Reston, Va. – Top leaders from government, academia, and industry will be discussing the most efficient and fastest ways to fly to space or closer to home at the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) Propulsion and Energy Forum and Exposition, held 19–22 August in Indianapolis, Indiana.

“The AIAA Propulsion and Energy Forum is unique in the industry because it’s the only event that encompasses aeronautics, space propulsion and energy technologies all in one place,” said Dan Dumbacher, AIAA executive director. “Energy and propulsion are at the heart of aerospace. The forum is the place to learn about new technologies and meet collaborators.”

Topics include everything from jet engines, rockets, and deep space propulsion to space habitation, electronic aircraft technologies, small satellites, and more. Following the AIAA Propulsion and Energy Forum, there will be a two-and-a-half day AIAA/IEEE Electric Aircraft Technologies Symposium (EATS), which has four keynote addresses, an active panel session, and 57 technical presentations.

Highlights include:

• Discussions on advancements in gas turbine and airbreathing technologies from subsonic to hypersonic
• Tory Bruno, CEO, United Launch Alliance, will give von Kármán Lecture in Astronautics
• Progress update on NASA’s Space Launch System and commercial human spaceflight
• Panel on electric propulsion systems designed for lunar, Martian and deep space exploration
• Roberto Guerrero, Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Operational Energy, will give a plenary on optimizing the U.S. Air Force’s operational energy
• Pickering Lecture about the space propulsion technology behind Dawn’s interplanetary missions
• Presentation on innovations in the field of energetic materials and 3D printing
• Electrification of Aircraft and Propulsion plenary by Rolls-Royce’s Alan Newby, Director, Aerospace Technology and Future Programmes
• Panels and presentations about electric/hybrid-electric aircraft propulsion from safety to standards and regulation

The forum features high-level plenary sessions that dovetail into Forum 360 panels for dynamic discussions on past, present, and future propulsion and energy advances. AIAA is expecting 850 technical presentations in 235 technical sessions, which will delve deeper into the subject matter and present cutting-edge research. All plenary and Forum 360 sessions will be streamed online.

Although the “Powering a Changing World” theme will run throughout the forum, a different area of focus will be addressed each day. Monday is focused on space technologies; Tuesday on advancements in turbines: efficiencies and capabilities; Wednesday on the challenges and opportunities of operational energy, gas turbines, and workforce; and Thursday on electrification of aircraft/propulsion.
