Kevin Matthies Senior Vice President, Chief Technology (CTO) and Quality Officer (CQO) Spirit AeroSystems

Kevin Matthies is Senior Vice President, Chief Technology (CTO) and Quality Officer (CQO) at Spirit AeroSystems – a global leader in aerostructures for commercial and military platforms. Matthies was appointed as an officer of Spirit AeroSystems in 2017.

In addition to his roles as CTO and CQO, Matthies is responsible for developing strategies and implementing integrated, cross-functionalsolutions that transform Spirit’s operations and culture to deliver on our customer’s expectations. Matthies is the executive leader for Spirit’s Operations Excellence Council, Quality Excellence Council and Safety Council.

Matthies joined Spirit AeroSystems in 2013 as Vice President of Airbus programs, Matthies was named Vice President and General Manager of the Boeing 787 program in 2015 and was named Senior Vice President of Global Fabrication in 2017. Matthies held responsibilities for global operations of Spirit’s Airbus and Boeing 787 program including P&L accountabilities. As the global leader for Fabrication, Mr. Matthies was responsible for the largest metal and composite structural aerospace fabrication business in North America. In 2019 Matthies became the CTO and CQO, with responsibility for all aspects of Engineering, Technology and Quality across Spirit’s global operations. Matthies lead Spirit’s transformation efforts on business critical data analytics, full lifecycle digital thread and a reimagined Quality Management System.

Matthies is a 34-year veteran of the defense/aerospace industry, having worked in executive positions for Spirit AeroSystems, Raytheon Technologies, Hughes Aircraft Company and General Dynamics. His roles have spanned program management (including P&L responsibility), operational leadership, Chief Engineer, software engineering technical leadership on several proprietary programs, and manufacturing engineering. Matthies joined Spirit AeroSystems after a 26 year career at Raytheon Technologies, where he last served as President of the Javelin Joint Venture between Raytheon Technologies and Lockheed Martin Corporation. Matthies has led numerous programs in support of the U.S. Army, U.S. Airforce, U.S. Marines Corp, U.S. Navy and Missile Defense Agency as well as international commercial and military customers.

Matthies is a board member for the American Composites Manufactures Association (ACMA), United Way of the Plains Kansas, and is an Executive Committee Member for the Aerospace Industries Association (AIA) Digital Transformation Council (DTC). Matthies is active member of the SkillsUSA program which empowers its members to become world-class workers, leaders and responsible American citizens.

Matthies earned his Bachelor of Science degree in computer science from California State University and a Master of Science degree in systems engineering from the University of Arizona. He is a graduate of Raytheon’s Leadership Excellence Program and was the recipient of the Raytheon Corporate Program Leadership Award.
