ISO TC20/SC14 U.S. TAG

AIAA is perhaps the single-most active developer of national and international standards for aerospace. As part of its proactive role in international standardization processes, AIAA administers the U.S. Technical Advisory Group (TAG) for ISO TC20/SC14, International Standardization Committee for Space Systems and Operations.

The foremost aim of international standardization is to facilitate the exchange of goods and services through the elimination of technical barriers to trade. The international demand for telecommunication capability,weather prediction, and navigation, in both the developed and developing nations has fostered an expanding commercial space marketplace that is highly competitive at both the system and component levels. International standards for expressing requirements as well as capabilities and the means of verifying performance are essential to facilitate fair and equitable trade that will result in reliable commercial space systems.

In addition, due to their ever increasing costs, international collaboration on major civil space programs has become necessary and the norm. International Standards are therefore essential to ensure such programs can be reliably integrated in a cost-effective manner.

This Committee is accredited by ANSI (American National Standards Institute). Its mission is to

• represent the U.S. aerospace community in all matters pertaining to the U.S. technical advisory group to ISO/TC20/SC14
• fulfill the functions and responsibilities of a TAG as set forth in its ANSI-approved Operating Procedures
• provide a U.S. forum to exchange ideas and viewpoints regarding international space standardization and to establish U.S. consensus on international standards.
