Awards Honor Key Contributions to Space Science, Technology, and Program Management

August 20, 2013 – Reston, Va. – The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) will present awards for key contributions to space science and technology during the AIAA SPACE 2013 Conference & Exposition, September 10–12, at the San Diego Convention Center, San Diego, Calif.

  • The Robonaut 2 Development Team, NASA Johnson Space Center, Houston, Texas, will receive the AIAA Space Automation and Robotics Award. The award is presented for leadership and technical contributions by individuals and teams in the field of space automation and robotics. The Team is being recognized for pioneering technical achievement and advancement of humanoid dexterous robotics for human space exploration. The award will be accepted by Ron Diftler, principal investigator.

  • The Orbital Express Flight Operations Team will receive the AIAA Space Operations and Support Award. The award is presented for outstanding efforts in overcoming space operations problems and assuring success, and recognizes those teams or individuals whose exceptional contributions were critical to an anomaly recovery, crew rescue, or space failure. The Team is being recognized for recovery from a post-launch anomaly which almost resulted in loss of the mission, and then successfully completing the prime mission objective resulting in becoming the first to perform an automated rendezvous, docking and servicing mission. The award will be accepted by Robert Friend, Boeing Defense Space and Security, Col. Fred Kennedy, USAF, Robbins AFB, and Randy Rubens, Boeing Advanced Space Systems.

  • The Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite (LCROSS) Team, NASA Ames Research Center, Moffett Field, Calif., will receive the AIAA Space Systems Award which is presented to recognize outstanding achievements in the architecture, analysis, design, and the implementation of space systems. The team will be recognized for outstanding leadership by designing and executing a space mission that has completely changed our view of frequency, structure, and diversity of planetary systems around the stars. The award will be accepted by Anthony Colaprete, Principal Investigator.

  • Lt. Gen. Eugene Tattini, Deputy Director, Jet Propulsion Laboratory, will receive the AIAA von Braun Award for Excellence in Space Program Management, which is presented to recognize outstanding achievements in the architecture, analysis, design, and implementation of space systems. Tattini will be recognized for exceptional technical management and performance to achieve space mission success and excellence, and for pioneering the development of National Security Space.

Additionally, Marc Cohen, Marc M. Cohen, Architect P.C., will receive a certificate of merit recognizing his technical paper, “Mockups 101: Code and Standard Research for Space Habitat Analogues,” as the AIAA Space Architecture Best Paper.
