New Standard Available for Public Review: Qualification and Quality Requirements for Space Solar Cells Written 17 March 2014

The AIAA Solar Cells and Solar Panels Committee on Standards has revised the standard Qualification and Quality Requirements for Space Solar Cells and it is now available for public review and comment. The original standard was published in 2005. Key revisions include the option of using displacement damage dose methodology to define radiation effects, qualification of cells for any trajectory as opposed to separate tests that confined qualification to just low earth orbit or geosynchronous earth orbit, definitions of minimum success criteria for each test, and characterizations to collect sufficient data to predict electrical performance at a given stage of mission life. As with the previous version, the standard defines terminology and establishes uniform processes, procedures, and systematic methods for verifying the capability of a photovoltaic device to operate in a relevant space environment.
