AIAA Hails End to Arbitrary Budget Caps and Calls on Congress to Pass FY2020 Appropriations
August 1, 2019 – Reston, Va. –The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) applauds the bipartisan vote in Congress to fund the government over Fiscal Years 2020 and 2021.
AIAA Executive Director Dan Dumbacher made the following statement upon passage of the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2019:
“The aerospace and defense industry is critical to our nation’s well-being, providing major contributions to national defense and homeland security, the economy, our quality of life, and education and learning. For too long the unpredictable fiscal environment and threat of sequestration has troubled our community.
“The deal brokered by congressional leaders and executive branch officials increases defense spending and funding for other aerospace-related programs over the next two fiscal years. And, more importantly, this measure permanently ends the arbitrary budget caps established by the Budget Control Act of 2011—something AIAA has continued to ask Congress to address. This is welcome news as our members conduct research and work on initiatives to return American astronauts to the moon and beyond, grow a commercial economy in low Earth orbit, integrate unmanned aerial systems more effectively into the national airspace, develop new aircraft to fly at supersonic speeds, and modernize our defense capabilities among many other critical endeavors. Congress must now complete their work on Fiscal Year 2020 appropriations and more broadly return to a regular appropriations process.”
