AIAA to Recognize Excellence in Aerospace at the 2020 AIAA SciTech Forum Written 5 December 2019

December 5, 2019 – Reston, Va. – The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) is pleased to announce the winners of awards to be presented during the AIAA SciTech Forum, held 6–10 January 2020 at the Hyatt Regency Orlando in Orlando, Florida. 

“AIAA members are the visionaries, technological leaders, and accomplished professionals who are part of a community working together to build a better world for us all,” said Daniel Dumbacher, AIAA executive director. “We are proud to recognize these exemplary professionals for their accomplishments in the aerospace profession, outstanding merit, and contributions to the art, science, or technology of aeronautics or astronautics. They motivate and inspire us.”

The following education, literary, and technical awards will be given for outstanding contributions in the field; winners having been chosen by their peers from related AIAA committees.

Education Awards

Abe M. Zarem Award for Distinguished Achievement in Aeronautics
The Zarem Award was established by AIAA and Dr. Abe Zarem as a means for students pursuing advanced degrees (master’s level candidates) in aeronautics to showcase their talent and work.
Cole Anderson, Oregon State University 

Abe M. Zarem Educator Award in Aeronautics
The faculty advisor of the student winner of the Zarem Award for Distinguished Achievement (Aeronautics) is recognized for his role in guiding and mentoring the student.
Roberto Albertani, Oregon State University 

Abe M. Zarem Award for Distinguished Achievement in Astronautics
The Zarem Student Award was established by AIAA and Dr. Abe Zarem as a means for students pursuing advanced degrees (master’s level candidates) in astronautics to showcase their talent and work.
Johnie Sublett, Georgia Institute of Technology 

Abe M. Zarem Educator Award in Astronautics
The faculty advisor of the student winner of the Zarem Award for Distinguished Achievement (Astronautics) is recognized for his role in guiding and mentoring the student.
Dimitri Mavris, Georgia Institute of Technology 

2019 John Leland Atwood Award
This award recognizes a recent outstanding educational achievement and encourages innovative improvements in aerospace education.
Azad M. Madni, Ph.D., University of Southern California 
For exemplary leadership in aerospace systems engineering education and research, and for lasting contributions to the aerospace industry as thought leader, author, educator, researcher and mentor. 

Literary Awards

2020 Gardner-Lasser Aerospace History Literature Award
The award is presented for the best original contribution to the field of aeronautical or astronautical non-fiction literature published in the last five years dealing with the science, technology, and/or impact of aeronautics or astronautics on society.
Jeremy R. Kinney, National Air and Space Museum 
Reinventing the Propeller: Aeronautical Specialty and the Triumph of the Modern Airplane 

2020 AIAA History Manuscript Award
This award is presented for the best historical manuscript dealing with the science, technology, and/or impact of aeronautics and astronautics on society.
Glen R. Asner, Office of the Secretary of Defense 
Stephen J. Garber, NASA Headquarters 
“Untethering Spaceflight: A History of U.S. Space Exploration Policy 1999-2004” 

2020 AIAA Pendray Aerospace Literature Award
This award is presented for an outstanding contribution or contributions to aeronautical and astronautical literature in the relatively recent past.
Russell M. Cummings, U.S. Air Force Academy 
For being the lead author on a groundbreaking undergraduate text that introduces computational  fluid dynamics to aeronautical engineering students. 

2020 AIAA Summerfield Book Award
This award is presented to the authors of the best book recently published by AIAA.

Service Award

2020 AIAA Diversity and Inclusion Award
This award recognizes an individual or group within AIAA who has devoted time and effort and made significant contributions to the advancement of diversity and inclusion within the Institute
Charles Wilson, MIT Lincoln Laboratory (retired) 
For zealously pursuing AIAA’s Diversity and Inclusion initiative, hosting special events and collaborating with organizations to promote progress in diversity for AIAA and with the AIAA New England Section team. 

Technical Awards

2019 AIAA Aerodynamic Measurement Technology Award
The award is presented for continued contributions and achievements toward the advancement of aerodynamics flow field and surface measurement techniques for research in flight and ground test applications.
Marcus Aldé, Lund University  
For wide ranging and pioneering work in developing and applying laser diagnostic techniques, including linear and non-linear approaches, for study of fundamental and practical combustion. 

2020 AIAA de Florez Award for Flight Simulation
This award is presented for an outstanding individual achievement in the application of flight simulation to aerospace training, research, and development.
Edward L. Burnett, Lockheed Martin Aeronautics (retired) 
For his outstanding contributions to the nation’s most advanced military aircraft through the art of modeling and simulation to enhance controllability and performance. 

2020 AIAA Intelligent Systems Award
This award is presented to recognize important fundamental contributions to intelligent systems technologies and applications that advance the capabilities of aerospace systems.
Jonathan P. How, Massachusetts Institute of Technology 
For outstanding and sustained contributions to the decision making and control of intelligent autonomous aerospace vehicles. 

2020 AIAA Mechanics and Control of Flight Award 
This award is presented for an outstanding recent technical or scientific contribution by an individual in the mechanics, guidance, or control of flight in space or the atmosphere.
Christopher N. D'Souza, NASA Johnson Space Center 
For seminal contributions to the theory and practice of autonomous guidance, navigation, and control of space vehicles. 

2020 AIAA Structures, Structural Dynamics and Materials Award
This award is presented to an individual who has been responsible for an outstanding sustained technical or scientific contribution in aerospace structures.
Stephen P. Engelstad, Lockheed Martin Aeronautics
For outstanding contributions as an industry leader in R&D and DOD applications of new aeronautics computational mechanics and composites structure/certification technologies. 

2020 AIAA Survivability Award 
This award is presented to an individual or a team to recognize outstanding achievement or contribution in design, analysis, implementation and/or education of survivability in an aerospace system.
Charles F. Frankenberger, Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division 
For technical and leadership excellence in propulsion system survivability enhancement and executing multi-service test programs to evaluate and improve overall aircraft survivability.  

In addition to the awards, best technical and student papers winners and student paper competition winners will be announced at the lunch.
