AIAA reached a milestone of 100 corporate members on 11 January 2013 as its Board of Directors approved the membership of eight new corporations.

Jim Maser, AIAA’s corporate membership committee chair, stated: “Reaching the milestone of 100 corporate members is a testament to the value that America’s aerospace corporations place on AIAA as a voice of the professionals who continuously work to advance our nation’s aerospace industry.”

AIAA mourns the death of AIAA Honorary Fellow James W. Plummer, a former under secretary of the Air Force, and director of the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) under Presidents Nixon and Ford. Plummer passed away 16 January, in Medford, OR; he was 92 years old.

Plummer served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, where he pioneered the development of radar tactics from carrier based aircraft, while serving in aircraft-operating squadrons on the USS Enterprise. After the war, Plummer worked from 1947 to 1995 at the U.S. Navy Test Center, Patuxent, MD, where he evaluated airborne communications and navigation equipment.

AIAA is seeking an outstanding candidate with an international reputation to assume the responsibilities of Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Guidance, Control, and Dynamics. The chosen candidate will assume the editorship at an exciting time, as new features and functionality to enhance journal content are being added to Aerospace Research Central, AIAA’s platform for electronic publications. The Editor-in-Chief is responsible for maintaining and enhancing the journal’s quality and reputation as well as establishing a strategic vision for the journal. He or she receives manuscripts, assigns them to Associate Editors for review and evaluation, and monitors the performance of the Associate Editors to ensure that the manuscripts are processed in a fair and timely manner. The Editor-in-Chief works closely with AIAA Headquarters staff on both general procedures and the scheduling of specific issues. Detailed record keeping and prompt actions are required. AIAA provides all appropriate resources including a web-based manuscript-tracking system.

Interested candidates are invited to send letters of application describing their reasons for applying, summarizing their relevant experience and qualifications and their initial priorities for the journal; full résumés; and complete lists of published papers.

AIAA has selected Timothy C. Lieuwen, Ph.D., to replace Prof. Frank Lu as the editor-in-chief of its Progress in Astronautics and Aeronautics book series. Lieuwen had served as interim editor-in-chief of the series, following Lu’s retirement from the position in December, 2011. Lieuwen is an AIAA Associate Fellow and the executive director of the Strategic Energy Institute at the Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, GA, where he is also a professor in the School of Aerospace Engineering.

AIAA and the The George Washington University’s Elliot School of International Affairs’ Space Policy Institute will co-host “Columbia +10: Lessons Learned and Unlearned,” 8 March, in the Marvin Center’s Continental Ballroom, 800 21st St. NW, Washington, DC. The event will feature panels and speakers exploring the Space Shuttle Columbia tragedy, its causes, the responses to the tragedy, and the lessons learned and forgotten. AIAA’s 2nd Annual California Aerospace Week program, set for 12–13 March in Sacramento, will cast a spotlight on California’s vibrant aerospace industry. AIAA members, along with representatives from NASA and industry, will host a series of panels, hearings, and receptions, aimed at educating California lawmakers about the importance of aerospace to California’s economy. The 2013 AIAA Congressional Visits Day program will take place 19–20 March in Washington, DC. Every year, AIAA members – engineers, scientists, researchers, students, educators, and technology executives – convene in Washington, DC to take part in the program. They meet with national decision makers to discuss critical industry issues in civil aeronautics, civil astronautics, and defense.

Winners of the Undergraduate, Undergraduate Team, and Master’s categories received $1,000. The winner of the Community Outreach category received $500.

The AIAA Member Spotlight for February 2013 shines on Lynn Nicole Smith, AIAA Associate Fellow, and Senior Project Manager, Orion Crew & Service Module, at NASA’s John H. Glenn Research Center, Cleveland, OH. Smith has been an AIAA member since 1998.

Throughout her membership, Smith has been actively involved in the affairs of AIAA, sitting on numerous of the Institute’s committees, including: the Membership Committee, the Public Policy Committee, the Regional and Section Activities Committee, and the Young Professional Committee. Additionally, Smith was the Regional Deputy Director of Public Policy for AIAA Region 3 from 2007 to 2010, and sat on the AIAA Board of Directors from 2004 to 2006. She has also been a member of the Space Operations & Support Technical Committee. She was also a volunteer guest judge on behalf of AIAA for the final round of the 2011 National Forensic League Policy Debate Championships, which centered on whether or not the United States should expand or limit its exploration of space. She was made an AIAA Associate Fellow in 2009.
